Sylvia BrownSylvia Brown is the Chief Executive of ACRE(http://www.acre.org.uk/), the national umbrella body of the Rural Community Action Network. RCAN’s local members are the primary source of support and advocacy for England’s 11,000 rural communities, specialising in fostering links between local community action and statutory structures, local government plans and public service delivery. Sylvia’s long history as a grass roots activist includes both statutory and voluntary sector roles. She has been a parish councillor for many years, focusing on relationships with local government, particularly on planning, community facilities and sustainable development. She chaired the multi-agency Rural Forum for Wiltshire for a period of six years. Sylvia is active in many government arenas concerned with developing relationships between communities and local government, including those tackling the Local Government Performance Framework and the Duty to Involve. She is a member of the executive group of the Community Sector Coalition and has worked with other coalition members on specific community-focused projects. In 2007, Sylvia received the OBE for services to rural communities.
