Marmot Review on Health Inequalities published

26 Feb 2010

The long-awaited review on Health Inequalities, chaired by Sir Michael Marmot, was recently published. It establishes a number of new initiatives to tackle the problem of health inequalities in England, and argues that central to the delivery these objectives will be action taken by “central and local government, the NHS, the third and private sectors and community groups.”

The Compact receives a specific mention when looking at the ‘role of the third sector’, and the report states that “Issues of sustainable funding need to be addressed as part of the Compact between statutory partners and the third sector.”

Recognising the role of the Compact in delivering better partnership working and tackling inequalities embeds the Compact as central to an increasing range of issues. Compact Voice will be working to provide support to the Sector on any initiatives arising from this review, and which affect the sector. In particular, Compact Voice will ensure the Compact is seen as more than just about resource allocation, and that its other key principles – of ensuring involvement in policy development, and advancing equality, are also recognised.
